Children's story books with a difference
By S M Jiffrey ABDEEN - Kandy South Group Corr
Pre-School is not a school but a medium in which the kids are
prepared for the requirements of school. They should not be given too
much of book work but allowed to play and mingle with other children.
A book presented to Kapila Kumara Kalinga who presided at
the launch. Also in the picture are Dr Dhammika P Bibile,
Ranjith Rajapakse and Chathuranga Rajapakse. |
This must be imparted to children who are between 3 and 5 years who
attend these pre-schools, said Dr Dhammika P Bibile a former Deputy
Director General of Department of National Education and Director
General Child Research and Development Training Institute.
He made these observations when he addressed the launching of 16
children's story books. Five books have been written in English.
Dr Bibile said uniforms in pre-schools are not really necessary. The
children should be allowed to play in normal dresses and help them to
get over the problem of familiarization to the new life they are trying
to enter.
Dr Bibile said that the launch of the 16 books on a single occasion
is good and what is fed to the children should be more real than
imaginary. They should live with reality and do the right things. These
books will be useful for children between the ages of 5 and 10 years and
even up to 18 years.
Dr Bible also said that the present generation is addicted to the
Internet and they rush to computers for every little thing. What is
important is that they must read and grasp or assimilate knowledge. They
should discuss problems with others. They must be creative and more
close to reality. It is only then we could expand out knowledge and look
at life in a more creative and real manner.
Referring to the 16 books which were launched, he said that it was a
great effort and he congratulated the authors for the great efforts
taken. What is most important is that apart from the pleasures the
children may derive after reading these books, they should also learn
something which they could put to use. We must do a careful study of the
children in the classrooms. We must have a look at their background. If
a child displays aggression, this is something he has picked up from the
family or at the grassroot level. The teacher should study the behaviour
pattern of the child and take the corrective action. Child psychology is
important and plays a vital role.
Also addressing the audience were Chathuranga Rajapaksa and
Samarakoon Pathiraja. |
