Victor launches Samma Gee Sara DVD
Channa Bandara Wijekoon
The much awaited Buddhist devotional songs DVD of Dr Victor
Ratnayake, Samma Gee Sara was launched at BMICH recently.
The set up was totally different to yet another DVD launch. It was a
refreshing and rare experience for the audience comprised of Victor’s
fans. The audience observing the five precepts with Ven Sirisumana Thera
was the curtain-raiser of the program.

Victor’s golden and ever youthful voice took a turn towards devotion
on the day. The event started with Victor singing Samindu Paamula and
Niwan Dutu Himi written by late Premakeerthi de Alwis. It set the mood
perfectly for the proceeding.
Victor has nurtured his voice carefully to sing love songs, patriotic
songs and devotional songs giving the appropriate feel to them, said
Prof Saman Chandra Ranasinghe of Sri Jayawardenapura University.
Especially when he sings Buddhist devotional songs, Victor takes his
listeners on a trail beyond mere enjoyment towards spirituality, he
added.
Senior Lecturer of Attanayake M Herath said that Victor had given a
new meaning to Buddhist devotional songs which evolved from the post
colonial era. Those songs were brought forward by the greats like
Mohideen Beig. He urged mass media to recognise the appetite of the
majority of listeners in the country for such songs.
Ven Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera said that Victor would be best
respected as an ambassador of music and made a request for him to sing
more Buddhist devotional songs in future.
Victor’s mesmerising voice echoed in the auditorium soon afterwards.
He sang Ama Dahara and Sil Gath Dinidun which were followed by a brand
new song Vandimi Thilowata and few more songs along with the evergreen
Buduhamuduruwo Apith Dakinnathi to quench the thirst of his fans.
