Prime Minister D M Jayaratne participated in a religious ceremony at Sri Sudharmarama Temple in Etambagaskada, Vavuniya recently. Sri Sudharmarama temple had been affected due to many terrorist activities in the past 30 years. Here Prime Minister D M Jayaratne presenting a donation for the development programmes in the temple. Chief Incumbent of the North and Eastern Provinces Ven Siyambalagaswewa Wimalasara Thera and Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thera also participated.


 

Water supply scheme

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena will be in Jaffna on July 9. He will lay the foundation for the office of Iranamadu water supply scheme in Jaffna.

He will inaugurate the pipe-borne drinking water supply scheme at Navaly and Sarasalai.


Cadeting to be reintroduced

The cadeting will be reintroduced to the Kalmunai Zahira College in Kalmunai Zonal Education area.

The students were not able to undergo cadet training for the past two years as a co-ordinating officer has not been appointed by the Sri Lanka Cadets Corps.

The training was a popular extra-curricular activity at the school. College principal M M Ismail said cadeting is vital for personality development of students.


Annual flag hoisting at K’gama mosque

The annual flag hoisting ceremony of the Kataragama mosque parallel to the annual Kataragama Esala festival took place at the Kataragama mosque on Friday under Uva Chief Minister Sashindra Rajapaksa’s patronage.

Kirivehera Raja Maha Viharadhipathi and Uva Wellassa University Chancellor Ven. Dr. Aluthwewe Soratha Thera, Kataragama Sri Abhinavaramadhipathi and Chief Adhikarana Sanganayaka of Ruhunu Magam Pattuwa Ven. Shastrapathi Kapugama Saranatissa Thera, trustee of the mosque Alhaj M.H.A. Gaffar, and Moneragala district secretary UKS Mihindukulasuriya were among the participants. The guests were conducted to the mosque with Muslim rituals. The chief minister said that this is the sixth time he was participating in this Islamic religious programme as Kataragama Basnayake Nilame.

He said he was happy to participate in this ceremony as a Buddhist, as it promotes peace and harmony among all communities. The chief minister said this is a message that they can give the world at a juncture where some Western powers are trying to discriminate Sri Lanka.

Ven. Dr. Soratha Thera, Ven. Kapugama Saranatissa Thera, Alhaj Gaffar and Mihindukulasuriya also spoke.


Leopards on the prowl

Leopards are on the prowl in the Piduruthalagala and the Bopathalawa, Ambewela and Bogawanthalawa forest ranges.

Recently a huge leopard was trapped in the Piduruthalagala forest range area. The estate workers and the women pluckers in these areas are being in fear due to this.


PS chairman’s vehicle shot at

Some unidentified persons are alleged to have opened fire at the vehicle of Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha chairman Sampath Vidanapathirana while passing Rotte road, Witharandeniya around 2.30 am yesterday, according to a complaint lodged at the Beliatte police station. Vidanapathirana who was travelling in the vehicle is reported to be unhurt.

Beliatte police are investigating.
