implementation of a US$ 5.6 million project in support of Sri Lanka's
official languages policy.
National Language and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva
Nanayakkara signed on behalf of the Sri Lankan government while Canadian
High Commissioner Bruce Levy signed on behalf of Canadian International
Cooperation Minister Beverly J Oda.

implementation of the National Languages Policy so that all Sri Lankans
can receive public services in their own language. The programme
designed to respond to the needs of enhancing ties between Sinhala and

The high commissioner said that the initiatives will directly and
benefit citizens of minority communities who have limited access to
services in their mothertongue.
"Special focus will be given to the Northern and Eastern Provinces,
and the estate sector. It will articulate comprehensive strategies to
mainstream gender equality and respect for cultural diversity," he said.
Minister Nanayakkara said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is keen on
implementing the languages policy so that no conflict will arise in the
