International Court of Justice President Justice Hishasi Owada called on External Affairs Minister Prof. G L Peiris at his ministry. Justice Owada and Minister G L Peiris discussed matters pertaining to International law and justice.


Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana who is visiting the People’s Republic of China at the invitation of the People’s Association for Friendship and Co-operation with foreign countries met officials of the Chinese Communist Party at the Communist Party headquarters in Beijing recently. Public well opened in Pandithirippu

The Sri Lanka Army opened a public well in Pandithirippu area in Jaffna catering to a long felt need of the people.

An officer of the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna stated that the villagers in Madagal South Pandithirippu area were suffering from a scarcity of water for a considerable period during the year. He said the 513 Brigade in Uduvil and the Civil Affairs office constructed a large well to provide water to the villagers with the support of the Munchee Company at a cost of Rs 250,000.

He also stated that around 35 families are benefiting from this well which is over 25 feet deep. He added that the villagers had to walk nearly three kilometres to fetch water.


Water cut

Water supply to the following areas will be interrupted from 8.30 am to 5 pm on July 3 due to the interruption of electricity supply to the Kethhena water treatment plant of the Kalutara Integrated Water Supply scheme.

Areas affected are Waskaduwa, Pothupitiya, Moronthuduwa, Kalutara (North and South), Katukurunda, Nagoda, Payagala, Maggona, Beruwala, Kaluwamodera, Moragalla, Dharga town, Aluthgama, Bentara, Bombuwala and Philominawatta.

Water supply will be interrupted to the following areas from 8 am to 8 pm today to facilitate the Greater Kandy water treatment plant augmentation work.

Areas affected are Kandy city, Wegiriya, Pallemulla, Yatihalagala, Kondadeniya, Kulugammana, Kahawatta, Kurugoda, Bulugohotenna, Girakaduwa, Kahalla, Asgiriya, Ampitiya and Tennekumbura.


Dancing king

K.H.Brampi is a unique and outstanding traditional dancer who is still performing even though he is 95 years. He is a resident of Ketawala, Beralapanatara.

He was born on June 19, 1916 at Dellawa. His father, K H Haramanis is a traditional low country artist.

Although Brampi is physically weak, his abilities have not faded. He has a vast knowledge in traditional dancing and cultural rituals.

He has showed his talents on Ruhunu Sevaya (SLBC) through many programmes such as Gigiri Walalu, Daduweta Pahan Eli etc. He has won the award of Mahatheerthabimani which is offered by the Cultural Department of Sri Lanka for his dedication to this field. He holds a number of other awards such as Eldest Artist in the Southern Province, Kalabooshana and Excellency Award for Elders.


Gone but not forgotten

The colleagues of Intake 48 (SLMA-Reg) will pay tribute to Maj Indika S Manawadu, Lt Thusitha Senanayake, Maj Jayantha Kumararatne, Maj Darshana Boyagoana and Maj K Ajith Gamage, war heroes who sacrificed their lives. This will be held on July 2 at the Wadduwa Army Rest and Kalutara Bodhiya.


New Principal

A A D Mahendra C Wijetunge assumed duties as the new principal of Lumbini Vidyalaya, Colombo 6 on June 23. A Grade II SLAS officer, Wijetunge earlier served as a teacher, teaching consultant, assistant director of education and deputy director of education (School Administration).


Lecture on acting

The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing a lecture entitled Face Behind the Mask, a lecture on acting, by eminent film director Sumithra Peris on June 30 at 6.30 pm at the Indian Cultural Centre, 16/2, Gregory's Road, Colombo 07.

Prize-giving

The prize-giving of the annual 'Light of Asia' contest conducted by the Colombo YMBA will be held on July 2 at 3 pm at the Main Hall, YMBA Borella.

Country Director of the British Council Tony Reilly will be the chief guest.


Founder's Day

Dharmaraja College, Kandy Founders Day will be commemorated with a Bodhi Pooja, Pinkama and Dhamma Desana at Sunethraramaya in Kotte at 7 pm today.

It is being organized by the OBU of the Colombo branch.


Public talk

Dr Kosala de Silva will deliver a public talk in English on 'Mind' as Explained in Abhidamma" at the meeting of the Servants of Buddha Society on Saturday, July 2 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya. All are welcome.
