Daily News report bears fruit

National Heritage Minister Dr. Jagath Balasuriya has taken action to protect the first Sinhala Buddhist National School in Dodanduwa on reading our report dated June 28, 2011.

He has requested the Education Ministry to vest this school in the central government and remedy its shortcomings for the benefit of future generations.

The minister told the Daily News that they will take action immediately to protect the school, now called Piyarathana Vidyalaya.

The minister added that the school can accommodate around 850 students. However he had got to know from the Daily News that currently there are only around 80 students and 15 teachers in this school.

The minister assured that he will make a proposal to the Cabinet to rejuvenate this school.
