Katagamuwa entrance to Yala National Park to open soon

The Katagamuwa access road to the Yala National Park will be opened
for public use shortly, a Wildlife Conservation Department spokesperson
told the Daily News yesterday. With this opening the public can have
access to the park from all main entrances.
The spokesperson pointed out that the decision to open the Katagamuwa
entrance was taken to control the crowding of visitors to one side of
the park. Visitors to the park have been increasing with the dawn of
peace.
'The crowds can disturb the natural behaviour of the animals. The
opening of the new access road will help control the crowd, she
observed.
She also requested people who travel along the Kataragama-Buttala
road to use block two of the Galge entrance to enter the park. She
revealed that 113,403 visitors had come to Yala during the first quarter
of this year. Among them 42,545 were foreign and 70,858 local visitors.
The total number of visitors to Yala during last year amounted to
253, 545. Among them 33,508 were foreigners. The Yala National Park
extends to about 126,000 hectares and is replete with various species of
fauna and flora.
