Hemanthi GURUGE
The Elections Department began distributing voter registration forms
from June 1, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriva said. Deshapriya
requested the public to inform the Grama Niladari, District Election
Secretariat or the Elections Commissioner if they do not receive the
voter registration forms by July 15. He said reviewing the voter
register annually has a direct impact on the election process.
“The responsibility of preparing an accurate voter register lies not
only with the Elections Commissioner and the Grama Niladari. It is also
a responsibility of the political parties, voters, media institutions
and the public,” Deshapriya said.
The Elections Commissioner was speaking at a workshop organized by
the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) at Hotel
Renuka on Thursday. The PAFFREL requested the Elections Commissioner to
set up a separate desk to obtain complaints during this period. The
Elections Commissioner said that the Local Government Election for the
remaining local councils will be held on July 23. |
