Sri Lanka in 2-1 win over Kuwait

Sri Lanka came from behind with a fine performance to register their
third successive victory as they defeated Kuwait 2-1 in their Davis Cup
Asia/Oceania Zone Three Group ‘A’ match worked off at the NTC courts in
Green Path yesterday.
After their earlier success against Vietnam and Myanmar, the home
side found stiff resistance probably for the first time in the
tournament as they came from one match down to pull off a hard fought
victory at the end.
Sri Lanka of course suffered a severe blow and an early setback when
Oshada Wijemanna went down to Mohamed Ghareeb in straight sets 7-5, 6-4
in the opening singles encounter.
However Sri Lanka came back magnificently to level the scores through
a splendid effort from Harshana Godamanna who rallied around beautifully
to beat his opponent Abdullah Maqdas in the second singles fixture.
Godamanna then combined well with Rajeev Rajapaksa and the pair added
the finishing touches with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over the
combination of Abdul Rahman and Mohamed Ghareeb in the doubles
encounter.
Sri Lanka thus maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament and
will take on Malaysia in their next match at the same venue today. |
