Flood death: two youths held

Two suspects have been taken into custody in
connection with the death of a youth during the recent floods.
Chaminda Prasad Godakandaarachchi of Kukugoda was believed to have
drowned during the floods in Welipenna. However, police
investigations revealed that two men had pushed him into a canal
while he was standing on the Jayaneththi bridge.
Water interruption
Water supply to the following areas will be
interrupted for eight hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 20, 22,
24, 27 and 29 and July 1, 4 and 6 to facilitate improvements to the
Negombo water supply scheme, said the NWSDB yesterday. The areas
affected are Negombo MC area, Duwa Pitipana, Katunayake IPZ,
Katunayake SLAF camp and the Katunayake-Seeduwa UC area, said the
release.
Death of Cecilin Senanayake
The death occurred of Mrs. Cecilin Senanayake of
Hakmana. She is the mother of Ariya Rubasinghe, Director General
Media Centre for National Development. Funeral takes place at the
family burial grounds at Lalpe, Hakmana today.
Steel rods without SLS certification seized

The Consumer Affairs Authority's (CAA) Investigation
Unit yesterday seized 110 tonnes of steel rods manufactured without
SLS certification at a factory in Madampe, Chilaw.
Investigators seized the steel rods valued at over
Rs.10 million stored at the factory.
Investigations were carried out on the direction of
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando who has
instructed the CAA officials to intensify raids on errant
manufacturers and traders.
Belvoir Poson bhakti gee
The annual Poson Bhakti Gee recital by students and
teachers of Belvoir College International, Dickmans Road, Colombo 5
will be held on June 21 at 5 p.m at Vishakha Vidyalaya, Jeramias
Dias Hall, Vajira Road.
The programme consists of 16 songs in three
languages. The music teacher Diana Wijesekera will direct the
choirs.
Young Mens' Buddhist Association Colombo President
Suranimala Abeygoonsekera will be the chief guest.
Sil campaign
Over 500 scouts representing 22 schools in Colombo
will participate in a Sil campaign at Sri Sunandaramaya, Kalubovila
today from 6 am to 2.30 pm.
YMMA annual conference
The 61st annual convention of the All Ceylon YMMA
Conference will be held tomorrow from 9.30 am at the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka Auditorium, 30A, Malalasekera
Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem will be the chief
guest while Bar Association President Shibly Aziz will be the guest
of honour.
AGM of St Benedict's College OBU
The 107th AGM of the Old Boys' Union of St
Benedict's College will be held on June 26 at 10.30 am at the
college hall. It will be preceded by Holy Mass at 9.30 am.
All old boys will be present for the Holy Mass. The
annual sessions will be followed by a fellowship lunch and
get-together at the Old Bens Sports Club.
Youth Parliament opening

The Youth Parliament conducted by the National Youth
Services Council will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on
July 1 at 10 am at the Youth Theatre, Maharagama.
There are 335 young members of Parliament in this
new institution. Out of this 332 are elected by the members of youth
clubs. One is nominated to represent differently-abled people.
OBU family mass
The monthly family mass organized by the Group of
'88 of St. Joseph's College Old Boys' Union will held tomorrow at
8.30 a.m. followed by fellowship and breakfast.
All old Joes and their families are invited to
participate in this event.
AGM
The 33rd Annual General Meeting of the Institute of
Management of Sri Lanka will be held on June 20 from 6.30pm at Palm
Lounge, Galle Face Hotel.
Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal will be
the chief guest.
Employees shortage

There is a shortage of five clerks and four postmen in the
Bulathsinhala post office for a long time.
This post office manages eight SPOs in the area and the employees in
service are unable to get leave.
This situation has been brought to the notice of authorities who so
far has not provided a solution.
Road in disrepair

The Osman road in the Sainthamaruthu Secretariat in the Kalmunai
Municipal Council area is in a state of disrepair.
The road is full of pot-holes which turn into muddy puddles on rainy
days inconveniencing motorists and pedestrians.
The affected villagers appeal to the authorities to take measures to
reconstruct the Osman road.
'Sipdora' scholarships awarded

Twenty Sipdora scholarships were awarded to selected students from
Samurdhi beneficiaries who excelled at the GCE (OL) examination in 2009
in Madurawala Divisional Secretariat Division.
The ceremony was held at the Madurawala Divisional Secretariat. The
scholarships were given by the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Development Authority
under the Sipdora Scholarship programme.
These scholarships of Rs 500 a month are awarded until the students
complete their GCE (AL) examination.
Request for a stage

Delduwa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Wadduwa, Kalutara needs a stage for its
main hall, students and teachers said.
This school has classes from grade one to the GCE O-L where many
talented students are deprived of improving their oratory, dramatic and
dancing skills, due to the non-availability of a stage.
Students and teachers appeal to authorities to intervene in building
a stage.
Buddhist Drama competition

Applications are invited from young dramatists for a Buddhist short
drama competition organized by the Kolonnawa Divisional Youth Clubs
Federation to mark the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi.
Dramatists living in Kolonnawa Secretariat division are requested to
apply on or before June 22 to the Youth Services Officer, Kolonnawa

The age limit is 15-29 years.
MRI geared to prevent possible E-coli outbreak

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Medical
Research Institute (MRI) to take action to prevent a possible outbreak
of E-Coli bacteria in the country.
Suspected food items will be checked by health officials.
There have been at least 20 deaths and 2,000 reported cases of
infection in over 11 European countries.
Symptoms of infection are stomach ache, Nausea, vomiting and
diarrhoea that can lead to kidney failure and anemia.
Three injured in mobike - bus crash

Three youth on a motor bicycle, sans helmets were injured when the
motorbike collided with a private bus in Boralugoda on the
Panadura-Ratnapura main road Thursday.
They were admitted to the Horana General Hospital and later two, who
were in a critical condition, were admitted to the Colombo General
Hospital.
The bus driver was taken into custody.
Horana police are investigating.
Meanwhile, a suspect wanted for several crime-related incidents, was
taken into custody by Ingiriya police.
Mahapola for Students

A batch of 188 students attached to the Eastern University received
Mahapola scholarships at a ceremony at the Swami Vipulananda Fine Arts
Faculty, Batticaloa recently.
Nena Abimani 2011
Students in Panadura Urban Council limits, who passed the GCE
Ordinary Level examination last year, will be felicitated at Agamathi
Balika Maha Vidyalaya on June 19 at 9 am. The students who were to be
felicitated are studying in schools in the Panadura educational zone.
This programme titled is organized by the Panadura Central Lions Club.

A Poson Bakthi Gee recital and exhibition of Lantern organized by
Gajaba Regiment, Saliyapura will be held at the Regimental headquarters,
today. NCP governor Karunaratne Divulgane will be the Chief Guest.
Sri Lanka YMCA makes history
The National Council of the Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA)
of Sri Lanka, held its 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 21,
2011, at the YMCA International Centre in Kurana-Katunayake. For the
first time in the history of the Council, a young person had been
elected to the office of President.
Felician Thayalaraj Francis, a 35 year old YMCA volunteer from
Batticaloa was elected unanimously as the 15th President of the Council.
Felician by profession, is a Psychosocial practitioner and a sought
after resource person, both within and outside Sri Lanka in the mental
health and psychosocial support sector. He is an old boy of St Michael's
College Batticaloa and had undergone formation at the St Joseph's Minor
Seminary in Batticaloa and National Seminary in Ampitiya. He graduated
with a Bachelor's degree from the Urbaniana University, Rome and has
also received a scholarship from the University of Oxford to participate
at an International Summer School.
The Council had also elected Nirmal De Fonseka from Galle and Philip
Damion from Kandy, as Vice-Presidents and Sampath Fonseka from Negombo
as Treasurer.
On the previous day of the AGM of Council, Lakshan Dias had been
inducted as the new National General Secretary Chief Executive Officer
by Rt Rev Kumara Illangasinghe, the former Bishop of the Diocese of
Kurunegala of the Church of Ceylon. Lakshan by profession is a lawyer
well-known in the ecumenical circles and civil society movements in Sri
Lanka and abroad. He had also worked at the Asia and Pacific Alliance of
the YMCAs as an executive secretary for programs and served as the
General Secretary of the YMCA of Kandy previously. He is an old boy of
Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa.
The YMCAs in Sri Lanka look forward to further strengthen the YMCA
movement under the new leadership to render better services to the young
people and their families in communities, while getting ready with new
initiatives to mark the 130 year presence of the YMCA in this country. |
