Clinton denies interest to head World Bank
"It’s 100 percent untrue"-Clinton’s spokesman:
US: The White House has denied that US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton is seeking to preside over the World Bank, a report says.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told Reuters on Thursday that
the top US diplomat has had no discussions on the World Bank post. “It’s
totally wrong,” he said.
Reports indicated that Clinton had sought to replace current World
Bank President Robert Zoellick when his term ends in 2012.
US President Barack Obama had expressed his support to Clinton,
earlier reports showed. However, an approval by all the 187 member
nations of the bank is required in order for Clinton to become its
president.
Meanwhile, Phillips Reines, a spokesperson for Clinton, also denied
that she had held conversations with the White House on the matter.
“It’s 100 percent untrue,” he said, adding, “Secretary Clinton has
not had any conversations with the president, the White House or anyone
about moving to the World Bank.”
Clinton, however, has publicly said she has no plans to stay in the
State Department for more than four years and would step down at the end
of Obama’s current term. Her tenure coincides with the resignation of
Zoellick.
The World Bank, which provides multibillion dollar loans to carefully
selected nations that are willing to conform to austerity measures
dictated by it, has always been led by former American officials and
executives. The bank is also based in Washington, D.C. Press TV |
