Under PM’s scrutiny
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne while on an official tour of Yunan Province in China inspected a tea cultivation. The Prime Minister and Chinese authorities discussed building a close cooperation between the tea cultivators in Lincang Province and Sri Lanka. The Chinese authorities expressed their willingness to introduce their technology to Sri Lanka.

Norwegian Ambassador Hilde Haraldstad paid a courtesy call on Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva at the minister’s office yesterday .

Free CFL bulbs for low income families

A programme to distribute CFL bulbs among Samurdhi recipients in Kesbewa was held at the Kesbawa Urban Council conference hall yesterday.

It was held under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka. Pradeshiya Sabha member Shaminda Silva had provide Rs 700,000 from the Sabha fund to provide CFL bulbs among low income groups in the kesbewa free of charge.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that the government’s aim was provide electricity to all houses in the county.


Farmers summit on June 23

A farmers summit with the participation of about 35,000 farmer leaders will be held at the Colombo Sugathadasa Stadium on June 23. It will be held under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's patronage, said Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S.M. Chandrasena.

The minister made this observation at a news conference at the Information Department Auditorium, Colombo on June 8 to brief the media on the fertilizer subsidy and agricultural development.

Minister Chandrasena said that the farmer population should attempt to get maximum benefits from the fertilizer subsidy which had been extended to all cultivations in addition to paddy.

He said the government was providing a fertilizer subsidy of Rs 350 for paddy and Rs 1,200 fertilizer subsidy for other crops.


Malaria walk and seminar

A walk and a seminar to raise awareness on malaria, and get community involvement to eradicate it from Sri Lanka organized by Sarvodaya will be held on June 14. Uva Province Chief Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa and Uva Province Health Minister A M Buddhadasa will participate.

The walk will start at 9 am on June 14, near Mahanama National School in Moneragala and proceed via Moneragala Kachcheriya Junction and end at the Youth Service Hall. A seminar on the importance of community involvement to eradicate from Sri Lanka has also been organized.

Blood donation

Silvathgama Dehemi Eksath Samajaya will hold a blood donation campaign on June 19 at Tholabugolla MV in Galewela divisional secretariat division. Spectacles will be distributed free as well.


Top police dog dies

The police dog Karat, responsible for capturing the highest number of suspects in crimes including murderers has died.

Karat also helped nab four LTTE terrorists wanted for demanding ransom. Police said Karat was brought to Sri Lanka from Germany.


Ganja cigars land two in trouble

Kelaniya group correspondent

Two men who pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing two ganja cigars were fined Rs 5,000 each by Gampaha Additional Magistrate and Additional District Judge Indika Attanayake.


Poson zone in Horana

A Poson zone will be organized by the Horana Pradeshiya Sabha to celebrate the forthcoming Poson.

Ingiriya, Handapangoda and Poruwedanda towns will be declared a Poson zone from June 15 to 19.

The religious activities include meditation sessions, dansals, bakthi gee, a lantern competition, drama festivals etc.

Horana Pradeshiya Sabha has called upon those interested to submit lanterns for the competition.


Higher ordination

The higher Ordination of Ven Nivandama Dhammissara Thera will take place today at the historic ‘Uposathagaraya’ of Malwatte Maha Viharaya, Kandy.

Dhammissara Thera is a pupil of Ven Dr Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera, the Vidyalankara Parivenadhipathi and elder son of Asoka Mallawarachchi and Kalyani Swarnalatha Wijesuriya of Nivandama, Ja-Ela.

He is the brother of the Ven Yakkaduwe Sugunaseela Thera of Sri Sumangala Piriven Viharaya, Wariyapola.

Minuwangoda Polwatta Sri Rathanasara Maha Vidyalaya will hold a special Poson Bhakthi Gee programme to mark Poson festival at the school on June 14 at 6.30 p.m.


Businessman's body found

The body of a businessman in Negombo who went missing with his van on June 8 was found in Dummaladeniya in Wennappuwa by the Wennappuwa police.

Police said that the body was that of Merril Krishantha (58). Police added that the van had also been found as it had been abandoned near the Dummaladeniya bridge.
