Footwear Advisory Council Chairman Ranjith Hettiarachchi said the
main stakeholders in the footwear industry are subcontractors the
government and parent companies have to work together to achieve a
significant industry growth rate in the long run.
"There should be a cluster of subcontractors and they will have to
use the common transport facility to deliver branded products on time,"
he said.
"More local footwear manufacturing companies are aspiring to become
lean companies while freezing the overgrowth of industry.
The government will have to play a major role by providing tax
incentives for footwear subcontractors, enabling them to purchase
machinery and other industry related raw materials at a lower price.
"It is an identified fact that there are lean and peak periods in the
local footwear industry. "Subcontactors need to look at various
diversification options while seeking more emergency exists during the
lean period".
"There should not be an over expansion in the industry and
subcontractors need to be prepared to freeze over expansion to overcome
the excessive supply," Hettiarachchi said.
