Charge d’affaires of Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka Dr Victor Chiujdea called on the Deputy Minister of External Affairs Neomal Perera at the Ministry Tuesday and held discussions on the follow-up to the Deputy Minister’s recent visit to Romania.

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) yesterday launched a new magazine, ‘Manchu’ which was issued as a supplement with the Dinamina newspaper. The first copy of the magazine was presented to ANCL Chairman Bandula Padmakumara by its editor Keerthi Mendis. The petition signed by over one million people against the controversial Darusman Report was handed over to UN spokesperson Tom Hockley by Adivasi Uruvarige Punchirala. Prof Gamini Samaranayake, Dr Prathiba Mahanamahewa and Shashi Welgama are also in the picture.


Policeman injured in mobike mishap

A police constable manning traffic was seriously injured when he was hit by a speeding motorcycle allegedly ridden by a drunken rider at Bakkuluoya in the Chilaw-Puttalam main road. The rider and the person on the pillion were also injured in the accident and admitted to Chilaw hospital.

Mundalama Police said that both the rider and pillion rider were drunk at the time of the accident. Police are investigating.


Public lecture on climate change

A public lecture on 'Climate Change -Where are we heading and why should we care, will be held on June 9 from 5.00 p.m at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, 'Vidya Mandiraya' 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 7. Former Research Scientist, Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University, USA Dr. Erandathie Lokupitiya will be the resource person.

The medium will be in English and Sinhala

The 22nd Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Historical Association will be held today at 2.00 p.m at the National Achieves Department auditorium, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7.


Police net bicycle thief

A suspect from Kaluwanchikudy was taken into custody for robbing a bicycle in his area.

Bicycle parts were sold across the country. Kaluwanchikudy Police are conducting investigations.


Bank manager jailed

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Amal Thilekeratne sentenced the manager of the Rural Bank of the Moratuwa MPCS to one year hard labour and suspended it for 10 years when the accused pleaded guilty.

The judge also ordered the accused Mary Margrette Perera to pay Rs 100,000 as compensation to the Moratuwa MPCS Rural Bank. The accused was indicted by the Attorney General with misappropriating Rs 336,000 from the bank during January to December 1992.


Man in robes fined

A conman who was in remand for collecting money masquerading as a monk wearing a yellow robe on the pretext of renovating an old temple in Anuradhapura was fined Rs 2,500 and released on Rs 50,000 personal bail by Attanagalla Additional Magistrate D A Ruwanpathirana.


New DS for A’pura

Skills Development and Youth Affairs Ministry Additional Secretary Mahinda Seneviratna will assume duties today as the District Secretary, Anuradhapura.

Seneviratna will be the 71st Government Agent of Anuradhapura and he served at Horowpothana as the Divisional Secretary.


Motorcyclist dies in collision

A motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a collision succumbed to his injuries at the Batticaloa hospital, Friday.

The motorcycle crashed into an oncoming lorry on the Batticaloa-Kalmunai main road. The deceased is M Sivalingam (40) of Mankadu. The lorry and driver were taken into custody by the Kaluwanchi-kudy Police.


Attorney granted bail

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducting investigations into criminal breach of trust of Rs 8.5 million from a businessman yesterday produced an Attorney-at-Law before Colombo Additional Magistrate M Wijeweera.

The suspect Attorney-at-Law was later released on bail in Rs 4 million bond, each with two sureties.

He was directed to appear in court again on August 30. The CID DIG is directing the investigations.


Kavi Bana

A Kavi Bana organized by the Kolonnawa Sahurda Community Development Foundation, by Ven Walasmulle Dharmathilake Thera, to mark the 2600th Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi, will take place on June 15, Poson Full Moon Day at 5 pm at the Kittampahuwa Sri Vivekarama Viharaya, Wellampitiya.


Pirith

An all night pirith chanting will be held at the Panadura Balika Vidyalaya on June 10 to mark the 60th anniversary of the school. An alms giving for 60 Buddhist monks will also be held on the following day morning at the school premises.

Principal K. Amara Nandani, the Academic staff and the organizing committee has invited all past students and the teachers to participate in this religious ceremony.

The 10th anniversary celebrations of the Public Service Pensioner's Trust Fund will be held on June 13 at Maharagama Youth center with the participation of Senior Minister for Good Governance and Infrastructure Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.


Seminar

The Sri Lanka Association for the advancement of Education (SLAAED) will conduct a seminar on "Issues in Secondary Education in Sri Lanka" on June 11 from 9.30 am to 12.30 p.m. at the Faculty of Education Seminar Hall, Open University of Sri Lanka.

Dr. G.B. Gunawardena will speak on proposals related to secondary education in the Draft Education Act, Dr. Upali Sedere on Management of Schools, Jezima Ismail on Education for National Harmony and Dr. G. Usvattearachchi on Why worry about Secondary Education.


Foiled

An allege attempt to kidnap a schoolgirl at Kokuvil Amman Veethy on Monday was foiled when the van that followed her tried to bundle her into the van.

The girl raised loud cries and the van had vanished from the scene. The girl ran into her school and was saved by the students and teachers.
