Established in 2005 University of Visual and Performing Arts speaks
of a long cherished history which dates back to 1883. The College of
Fine Arts in 1949 was pioneered by J D A Perera. With this glorious
history the University of Visual and Performing Arts will showcase the
talents they have garnered through the four-year degree course at the
University.
The Senior Lecturer Jagath Ravindra explained the principle
objectives of the exhibition:
"Now the role of artist has greatly changed with the advent of visual
art medium. It is actually a new medium of arts that helps our artistes
give vent to their aesthetic feelings in a different manner. The social
attitude in Sri Lanka regarding an artist and the works he or she
presents is not that much applauded.
"The problem here is that society expects artists to paint by looking
at some object or drawing scenarios. But this field of arts cannot be
confined to both sects since it is a subject of wide range. The message
we are trying to put across through this exhibition will change the
people's mindsets and they will see what kind of a duty should
materialise at the hands of artists."
"We organize this event annually since it is our duty to register
confidence in our students to go before public, display their talents
and win the hearts of people by entertaining their minds and hearts."
Said the Head of the Department of Visual Arts Sarath Gunasiri Perera.
The principal sponsor for the event is Gandhara and Gallery Red.
Addressing the gathering the Chairman of Gandhara and Gallery Red
Chairman Dian Gomes said: "We must offer our help to booming artists in
the field of visual arts. What I firmly believe always is that Sri
Lankans are capable. S, why can't we produce a Picasso and why don't we
contribute for that National cause if we have opportunities to help?
That is why I give the financial backup for this truly worthwhile
exercise."
The exhibition will come live on June 9.
