Zero casualties in mine clearing

Brigadier Udayantha Wijeratne

“The Sri Lankan Army is the only army in the world that has cleared 366,870 landmines without causing any damages to any mine-clearer within two years,” said Brigadier Udayantha Wijeratne of the Engineers Squad of the Sri Lanka Army.

He made this observation yesterday delivering a speech in the presence of military representatives of 41 countries at the ‘Defeating Terrorism-Sri Lankan Experience’ seminar held at the Galadari Hotel.

He also said that the landmines that were strewn by the LTTE in the North and East are being removed by the Army manually, mechanically and by using trained dogs. He said that there is 400 square kilometres still to be cleared.
