'More jobs with new systems'

Around 405 students receive certificates:

The new methods and technology adopted in universities will pave way for university graduates to find jobs easily, said Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake addressing the certificates awarding ceremony of the South Eastern University Centre for Extension Studies at Oluvil campus Arts and Culture auditorium recently.

Around 405 students of six diploma and certificate courses received certificates. The minister said records indicate that many of the graduates passing out are unemployed and the new systems which are introduced would change this by producing experts according to the needs of the country.

"Universities must play a pivotal role in producing graduates who can face the present day challenges. Changes are now afoot by the ministry for this task and all must extend their fullest support," he said.

In keeping with this task the South Eastern University will soon be equipped with Engineering, Science and Technology faculties to cater to the needs of the people in the area and ease problems confronted by students. Minister Dissanayake stressed the importance of English education to face present challenges and compete with the international market.

"In the future, the Centre for Extension Studies must conduct all their courses in English to produce English Teachers and others who can work in English.

"Therefore, English education must be given pride of place," he said.

The minister also highlighted the importance of university students to engage in sports.

He said that only seven percent of the university students are engaging in sports.

"Keeping this in mind workshops are being organized for new entrants to provide them with leadership qualities, skills in sports, develop tolerance and discipline without damaging their religious and cultural heritages.

"We will never give them military training such as handling arms and ammunition, or preparing bombs or defusing them.

"Parents need not worry about sending their children to this training," the minister said. He added that sports keep everyone fit and active improving their health.

Registrar H Abdul Sathar, CES Director Dr A Jahufar, Senior Asst Registrar, Asst Registrars and Deans of all faculties were also present.
