'Opposing public privileges is an HR violation'

Any opposition to a decision to grant privileges to the public is a violation of human rights, said Prime Minister D M Jayaratne.

He said so at the certificates awarding ceremony of the Human Rights People's Services Foundation held on May 31 at the Colombo Foundation Institute.

He pointed out that opposition by certain sections to the proposed private sector pension scheme is also a violation of human rights.

The Prime Minister added that it was ridiculous that powerful countries were keen on finding human rights violations in small countries like Sri Lanka while human rights are being violated in their countries.

We are all committed to protect human rights. This is important to eliminate conflicts between communities, he said.

"We showed the world during the humanitarian operation how the Sri Lankan army ensured civilians the right to live by providing them security from terrorists," the Prime Minister pointed out.

This function was also attended by the Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission former IGP Anandarajah.
