Rajans face a make or break situation
S M Jiffrey ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent
It is going to be a make or break situation for Dharmaraja College as
they will have to win the remainder of the matches this season if they
are to remain in the top division next season in the Schools 'A'
Division Rugby Tournament.
Rajans record this season in the tournament matches is something they
would like to forget like a bad dream as they have lost all the matches
played so far. St Anthony's College, Trinity College, St Peter's
College, Royal College, Kingswood College and S Thomas' College. The
matches ahead are tough ones and they will have to put up an improved
performance, if they are to mark their presence in the top league.
Much was expected from this Rajans side after the all island schools
under 18 Division One rugby tournament but sadly that was never to be.
The side is good and in Hisham Abdeen they have a fine coach who has
captained not only the national rugby team but also coached it.
Then what is going wrong with the Rajans. Even fitnesswise, they have
one of the finest fitness trainers in the hill capital in former
District Athletic coach J B Herath.
Rajans will be led by flanker Chanaka Jayasundara, a very hard player
in the loose and also his bone jarring tackles could be a 'thorn' in the
flesh for their opponents. His father Tilak Jayasundara captained the
school in 1978 and also played with distinction for Kandy Sports Club in
the back row.
The Rajans have the potential to come back strongly in the latter
part of the season as they did last year when Hisham Abdeen took over
the coaching and turned them around and they almost beat Isipatana
College in Kandy.
