Romesh lifts for a record

Romesh Samarasekera of Sri Lanka Air Force rewrote the National record books when he lifted 164 kgs clean and jerk in the 85kg category during the 45th men's and 10th women's National Weightlifting Championships at the Kelaniya University Gymnasium. Romesh outcast the previous record of 163 kgs which was established by his fellow Airman Ransilu Jayathilaka in 2008.

SL Army collected 24 points to emerged as the mens overall champions while the SL Air Force clinched the women's champion with 21 points.

The sailor D.M.I.C. Dissanayake who competed in the 62 kg category and lifted 252 kgs was given the men's Best Lifter award and R.M.N.S. Rajapakshe (Sri Lanka Air Force) who contested in 58 kg category with a performance of 144 kgs was picked as the Best Women's Lifter.

Sri Lanka Air Force obtained 23 points to win the second place while keeping Sri Lanka Navy in third place, three points behind in the men's championships.

In the women's category, Sri Lanka Navy became the second with 12 points while Rajagiri Vidyalaya, Aranayake which collected nine points contended with the third place.

The participation of Forces personnel were prominent in this years championships and nearly 80 lifters took part in both men's and women's championships.

The Championships were organized by the Sri Lanka weightlifting Federation and sponsored by the Sustagen nutritional supplement and A. Baur and Co. Ltd.
