RI, fine in drug cases

A trishaw driver who pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing and
trafficking heroin weighing not less than one gram, was sentenced to
three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000 in default another
one year imprisonment.
Kuruppu Arachchige Priyankara Banda of Pannala Police Division was
indicted by the Attorney General.
State Counsel Padmal Weerasingha De Silva told Court that police
found the heroin while examining the trishaw.
Meanwhile, another drug trafficker who pleaded guilty to a charge of
possessing and trafficking 21 grams of heroin was sentenced to two years
rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000, in default two years
imprisonment.
Meanwhile, W A Leelawathi with four mg of heroin was taken into
custody by police at the Alawwa busstand last Wednesday.
The suspect was a resident of Alawwa.
She was arrested following a public tip-off.
The woman was remanded until June 3. |
