The Anuradhapura District Agriculture Committee which met at the
Anuradhapura Kachcheri last week discussed water pollution and
contamination in Nuwarawewa and Tisawewa reservoirs, paving the way to
health and environment hazards.
The officials emphasised that in addition to garbage and waste water
being emitted from tourist hotels and holiday homes along the banks of
Nuwarawewa, overflowing toilet drainage systems in Ranasevapura pollute
the tank water.
It is learnt that around 200,000 people residing in Anuradhapura new
town area, Mihintale, Anuradhapura old city and the sacred area in
addition to devotees and tourists visiting Anuradhapura use the water of
these two tanks for drinking and washing purpose.
District Secretary H M K Herath said a team comprising high ranking
representatives of Army, Air Force, irrigation, agriculture, animal
production and health administrative service officials would engage in a
observation tour in both tank premises before reaching a permanent
solution. |
