Navy helps clean Beira Lake

Taking prompt action after it was observed that an area in the Beira Lake closer to Gangarama temple was polluted with oil and dead fish, Naval personnel assisted in cleaning up the polluted area yesterday.

It was revealed that the cause for the pollution was a discharge of used oil into the waters of the lake and a large number of dead fish washed ashore contaminating the area.

The Sri Lanka Navy with the assistance of the Land Reclamation Board, Central Environmental Authority and Colombo Municipal Council initiated the cleaning up of the Beira Lake and waterways connected to it under the Navy's Canal Cleaning Project.

Although the Sri Lanka Navy and Colombo Municipal Council continuously take steps to keep the Beira Lake clean, careless human activities still damage the purity of the lake.

The Sri Lanka Navy appeals to the public to refrain from activities which cause pollution and called on them to help keep the waterways and the city clean.
