'Priority for locals when issuing construction permits'

Priority should be given to local contractors when issuing permits for constructions, said Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

He said so addressing the launching ceremony of the website www.cgf.gov.lk at Sausiripaya recently. Certain local contractors are giving their permits to the foreign contractors, he pointed out stating that he will take action to change this.

"Advantage of the speedy development taking place in the country should be given to locals. One of the main problems faced by local contractors is financial constraints, he said. "Therefore, intervention is needed as banks cannot always find solutions to these problems."

Measures have also been taken to setup special funds to protect contractors throughout the country. The minister has requested to take appropriate measures to ensure that this fund is in operation.
