Celebrating Vesak the children’s way |
With the guidance of the Kiddies' Camp crew, the children will
construct creative and vibrant Vesak lanterns which will be hung up on
display. Judges will select the best lantern and every member of the
winning team will take home a prize.
Sulochana Dissanayake, who has graced many Kiddies' Camp over the
months, will set aside her enchanting puppets and entertain the audience
with a dramatized story by Sybil Wettasinghe, a name synonymous with
children's literature in Sri Lanka.
Generations of Sri Lankan children over five decades have
familiarized themselves with her delightful illustrations and unique,
colourful stories. With over 200 books and the State Literary Award and
the Gratiaen Prize under her belt, she has published locally and
internationally and with her work translated into many languages.
Sybil's stories make an interesting and educational read as they are
enriched with references to local customs, elements of cultural imagery
and the splendour of Sri Lanka's natural environment.
At the Kiddies' Vesak Camp Sulochana will narrate the intriguing
tale, The Vesak Lantern, while seated inside a giant vesak lantern
herself. Sulochana's theatrical and interactive approach to
communicating with children at previous Kiddies' Camps and Cinnamon
Lakeside Christmas events have earned her a special place in their
hearts. In the spirit of Vesak, the much looked forward to children's
snacks will be dished out 'Dansal style' and will include mini
hamburgers, pizzas, French fries, hot dogs, finger sandwiches, pop corn,
pasta, -eclairs, brownies, cookies, ice cream, ribbon cake and much
more.
The Kiddies' Camp is open to children aged twelve and below and will
take place from 3 pm to 6 pm. |
