Excerpts of the interview.
Q. What is the
business you are engaged in and how do you set about it?
A. I engage in
Reiki, an energy based healing method. This method has originated from
Japan in the 19th century founded by Dr. Mikao Usui. The healing process
was practised while fasting and praying for 21 days. He realized the
soothing effect and convinced that this helpes relieve pain, stress and
uneasiness. This energy healing method spread rapidly in Thailand and
China too and at present it is available in a number of countries.
However, the base roots are in Japan.
I was employed in the Six Senses Spa in the Maldives and had the
opportunity to meet natural healing practitioners from different
countries. Talking to them gave me consolation and I was fascinated by
their power. I wanted to further learn about these methods. The
practitioners I met were interested in educating people like me. This
was a turning point in my life. As I had spare time I managed to learn
and train under them. I obtained Reiki 1 qualification from the Maldives
under a South African lady.
I was able to save some money and went to Thailand to complete the
Reiki 2 and Reiki Masters. These levels were taught by a Guru named Tom
from America. I developed the skill through constant practice and I
reached satisfactory levels. Now I have been doing Reiki for the past
five years.
Reiki natural healing method is something new to Sri Lanka. But there
are a few practitioners who are doing well. As this method is related to
emotions and self development it will be a part of our life in time to
come. I started this practice in Sri Lanka recently and I engage in
teaching Reiki as well. The responses I received from close associates
are encouraging. I do house visits and there is a keen interest and
demand from a growing number of customers.
Reiki is a universal therapy that is attuned in channelling through
the practitioners. This is an interesting process and it amazes the
people who receive the benefit of the service.
Q. How do you balance
your family life and business?
A. The priority
in my life is my parents and sisters. They are very supportive towards
my venture and this is a motivating factor. As I am the youngest in the
family I get the best out of everyone. With the comfort of their love
and care I lead a happy life.
Q. What were the
challenges you faced?
A. My cousins
and relatives were suspicious of what I was doing and they thought this
is against the religion. However, with time I have been able to convince
them and give the benefit of this healing method to them.
Now they are the biggest supporters and this also has brought me many
customers. I also encountered difficulties in finding the right teacher
for Reiki. However, I was lucky to have one of the best teachers at the
end to develop the necessary skills.
The acceptance of this novel method and convincing people of the
benefit was a difficult task. Though, it took some time my service
receivers were happy that they underwent the healing process.
Q. What are your
goals?
Dilhara with her father |
A. I want to
set up a clinic and a wellness centre including a meditation facility in
Colombo. This will ensure providing a centralized service for the
convenience of the customers.
It is important to create awareness regarding this healing method and
educate the public. I also want to contribute in this regard.
Q. Was being a woman
an advantage to be in business?
A. No. Gender
does not matter. It is the application, dedication and commitment that
are necessary to move forward.
Q.
What is your advice to women in business?
A. Women should
believe in themselves. It is necessary to have a written set of goals
for proper direction. Be thankful for what you have achieved and strive
for the best.
Q. What were your
achievements in family life and business?
A. With regard
to family, I am fortunate to have understanding parents and supportive
sisters. My family takes that extra effort in providing me with
necessary atmosphere to conduct the healing process. They too have
benefited from my venture. Despite whatever I do family comes first for
me. The family bond and closeness are driving forces behind my success.
When I consider my venture where I became a Reiki Master, it is
something that I never expected. I was an aggressive person and I also
was short tempered. This nature was transformed through Reiki and I
became a calm and cool-headed person with great composure.
I live according to Reiki principals of do not being worried and
angry and do an honest job. The venture itself is an achievement and I
am happy about the progress I have made so far.
Q. What is your
contribution to society?
A. I have
helped many people to relax and be thankful for the life they lead. I
have made people appreciate everything in life. Reiki could help one to
become a balanced person when one is depressed. This I have given to
society. As Mark Twain said, do not go around saying that the world owes
you something. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. Make the
best use of the opportunities available. You can be a winner. |
