Metal quarry inconveniencing public

A metal quarry at Wellathe in Neboda, Kalutara near Clodon Estate which was closed decades ago due to public protests has restarted operations causing much inconvenience to residents.

The vibration caused by the blasting of a rock had damaged several houses nearby to the consternation of their occupants.

It is alleged that the owner of the quarry had restarted operations without informing authorities.

Women are reluctant to go to the nearby well to fetch water or for a bath fearing that a flying rock may strike them when blasting takes place without warning. Residents in the village have requested the Kalutara GA to intervene in this matter and halt the operation of this quarry.
