Indian Deputy High Commissioner Shri Vickram Misri addressing the
media said a number of cultural activities and programmes have been
organized not only in India but in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to
commemorate Tagore's 150th birth anniversary. He said though the
anniversary is being observed worldwide, the celebrations in Sri Lanka
have a special significance and relevance because Sri Lanka was
specially close to Tagore's heart.
He visited the country in 1922, 1930 and in 1934 and became
instrumental in the renaissance of the country.
During his third visit, Tagore laid the foundation stone for the Sri
Palee University on similar lines with the Santhiniketha in India. Sri
Palee students will perform several cultural activities in honour of the
university's founding father. |
