Sri Lanka-Israel:
MoU to expand agri cooperation

A Memorandum of Understanding for agricultural cooperation was signed
between Israel and Sri Lanka yesterday at Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.

The MoU was signed by Sri Lankan Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa
Abeywardane and Israel Agriculture Minister Orit Noked .
The two countries agreed to cooperate to achieve national and
international goals of agricultural development, promote exchange of
technical and scientific knowledge for the benefit of the agricultural
sectors as well as to exchange data and experience on agricultural
policies and their implementation and extension, research and
development system and encourage cooperation between the respective
associations and private sector of both countries, said Agriculture
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane.
He said the time has come to develop Sri Lankan agriculture sector on
a large scale as there is a peaceful background in the country. The
government focuses on development activities.
"The Israel government supported the development of Sri Lanka even in
the period of war. Israel achieved the highest agricultural development
in the world. The climate pattern in Israel is not favourable for
agriculture. But they do their cultivation even in deserts using
advanced technologies of water management," he said.
