President of Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Wijaya Amarasinghe who
met the Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated that carrom is
not included in the National Sports Festival. This sport has brought
many laurels to the country. Amarasinghe with the hope of popularising
the sport in the districts commenced a program. The first of this kind
was held recently in Jaffna.
Rohini Mathiaz along with two other former national champions M
Sheriffdeen and M.T.M. Hilmy conducted this workshop and the seminar at
Jaffna Central College.
At this seminar the main theme was to educate the players of the
rules and regulations of the sport.
After the completion of the seminar and workshop they also conducted
a tournament for the players of the Jaffna Peninsula which was attended
by over 150 enthusiastic carromites. They were form Jaffna Central
College, St John's College, St. Patrick's College, Kokuvil Hindu College
(Boys and Girls) Uduvil Vidyalaya, Chundikuli Ladies College, Jaffna

Sheriffdeen and Hilmy were helpful in translating the rules and
regulations to the Tamil speaking children. Two of them also were
engaged in an exhibition game which took the eyes of all present at the
seminar.
Vice President of Jaffna District Carrom Association J. Mohan was the
person instrumental in organizing this event in the district. Infact
some of the participants made their way to Colombo to participate in the
Junior National Carrom Championship 2011. It was interesting to see the
keeness for the game though they failed to win any medals.
