Environment Ministry to plant 2600 bo saplings

The Environment Ministry will launch a number of environment conservation programmes under the theme of Environment and Buddhism to commemorate the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi, Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.

About 2,600 bo-saplings will be planted at 93 temples throughout the country. Adding to this 2,600 bo -saplings will also be planted at temple sanctuaries around 50 temples.

The programme is aimed at conserving the unique, endemic and endangered species of the country.

The Ministry will also educate 2600 Buddhist monks, dhamma school children and devotees on environmental conservation to mark the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. The Minister also pointed out that action will be taken to legally protect selected bo-trees including Kalutara Bodhiya, Makewita Sudhu Bodhiya at Gampaha, Vel Bodhiya near Sri Dalada Maligawa and others. Selected 26 historic bo-trees linked to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya and other important bo-trees will also be conserved.

If temples interested in planting the 28 different bo-saplings in their temple premises , can make a request to the Environment Ministry. The qualified temples will receive the 28 different bo- saplings and name boards from the Ministry.
