Today not a holiday

May 2 (Today) was not declared as an additional public holiday, a
Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry spokesman told the Daily
News yesterday.
He said that today is considered as a normal working day for the
public sector and all government institutions and schools will function
as usual.
He said that a number of requests were received to announce May 2 as
a holiday since May Day had fallen on a Sunday this year.
Minister W D J Seneviratne had conducted a discussion with the
Ministry officials regarding these requests at the Ministry premises.
A final decision had arrived that there is no reason to declare an
additional holiday. Everybody could participate in May Day celebrations
since it was a Sunday and there is no need for a special holiday, he
said.
However, the spokesman also said that it has been declared as a
Mercantile holiday by the private sector and is also a bank holiday. |
