Big onion seed production a success


Central Provincial Council Deputy Chairman W.M. Yasamana handing over a packet of new big onion seed variety to a farmer.

The big onion seed production programme launched in Galewela under the direction of Agriculture Department has proved a success.

This seed variety named 'Galewela light red' has a high yield according to agriculture officials. They were distributed among the farmers recently at the Galwela Agrarian Service Centre by the Provincial Agriculture Department.

 

 

 

 


Ginger, saffron cultivation

Minor Export Crop Development Ministry will launch a ginger and saffron cultivation project in Matale District. Twenty five acres will be utilized in the first stage.

Ginger and saffron seeds will be distributed among the farmers at Rs 60 and Rs 30 per kilo respectively and each farmer will obtain 650 kilo grams of seeds.


Ganja seized

A suspect possessing forty packets of ganja was arrested by the Biyagama police at Malwana town Tuesday (26). The suspect, a resident of Wekandagama is due to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate Court.


Road in disrepair

Galewela-Kalawewa main road is in a deplorable state for a long time due to low maintenance repair.

Over 10 miles of this road from Galewela to Budugehinna have turned from bad to worse.

Public urge relevant authorities to take prompt action.


Boy drowns

A 16 year old boy was drowned in the Dewahuwa reservoir when he went for a bath with friends.

His body was found after 24 hours by the police.

He was identified as M Chatura Madusanka of Nilagama.


Feast of Divine Mercy

The Feast of Divine Mercy and the consecration of the new church will be held at the Church of Risen Christ, at Kadolkelle, Negombo on May 1, 2011 at 2 pm. It will be presided over by Most Rev Dr Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Arch Bishop of Colombo with the participation of Rev Fr Giyomi Nonis under the guidance of Parish Priest Rev Fr Linton Joseph.


National ceremony

A national ceremony to mark the distribution of CD containing the 2600 Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Song and Bhakti Gee to schools will be held at the Dharmaraja College Kandy under the patronage of the Mahanayaka theras of the Tri-Nikayas, on May 2.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne Education, Minister Bandula Gunawardene, Deputy Minister Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa and Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake will also be present.


Oratorical competition

The inter-school oratorical competition sponsored by Lake House as a prelude to the Mihintale Poson Aloka Pooja will be held at Mihintale Maha Vidyalaya on May 7 for the 49th occasion.

The first three winners of the senior and junior oratorical competitions will be presented cash rewards worth Rs 10,000, 7,500 and 5,000 with Piyasena Nissanka, D R Wijewardena, Buddhusarana felicitation trophies. The winners from fourth to 10th will be awarded Rs 1,000 each.


Dengue prevention day

The Ananda College 94 Group will hold a Dengue Prevention Day at the College on April 30. Three forces will help for the cause. Along with the collection of junk, there will be awareness sessions.


Woman dies of burns

A 75 year old woman resident at Iddagodella road, Kimbulapitiya has died of burns when her temporary abode caught fire around 8 pm on Wednesday. The body is lying at the Negombo hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy. Negombo police investigating the death said the cause of the fire has still not been ascertained.


Measures to minimize coastal erosion

The Coastal Conservation Department is taking measures to minimize coastal erosion in the Southern and Western coastal belt with the approach of Southwestern monsoon rains, Director General Anil Premaratne told the Daily News.

He said that Maravila beach was experiencing a sudden coastal erosion and two temporary breakwaters were constructed to control the situation. He said that the department is gathering equipment and technology such as geo textiles to control coastal erosion.


Annual Easter celebrations

The Annual Easter celebrations of the Colombo YMCA will be held on April 30 at 5 pm at the Colombo YMCA Gymnasium, 39, Bristol Street, Colombo 1. All are welcome.


Moon sighting conference

The moon sighting conference will be held on May 4 immediately after Salath UL Maghrib under the auspices of the Colombo Grand Mosque at the Madrasathul Hameediah Hall Colombo Grand Mosque to determine the date to commence the Islamic month of Jumadhal Aakhirah Hijri 1432 on the evidence of sighting the new moon in any part of Sri Lanka.

The Colombo Grand Mosque also appealed to the Muslim public to look out for the new moon immediately after Magrib on May 4 and to inform on 011 5234044, 2432110, 011 2434651 or 0777 366099 with reliable evidence and witness if the new moon is sighted.


AGM

The Annual General Meeting and get-together of the Matara St Thomas (Boys) College Old Boys’ Association will be held at the Sasakawa Hall, Kollupitiya on April 30 at 6 p.m. Further information could be obtained from Association President Dudley Edirisinghe on 0773 339118 or Secretary Captain N.S. Elders felicitation ceremony

The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Social Welfare Ministry will hold a ceremony to felicitate nearly 400 elders of Ratnapura and Kegalle districts on April 29 from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. at Rathganga Temple complex, Ratnapura.

The aim is to strengthen cooperation among elders in the country.

A concert with performances by elders will also be held.


Sarvodaya Walk

A walk organized by Sarvodaya to mark World Malaria Day will be held in Kurunegala town on April 29.

The walk will be held to make the public aware about malaria spreading in some provinces and to get community involvement to make Sri Lanka a country free of malaria. The walk will also commemorate the inception of the anti-malaria movement of Sri Lanka in Kurunegala 100 years ago. The walk will start in the morning at Suwa Medura on the Kurunegala-Negombo road.

Sarvodaya has also organized street dramas alongside with the walk.


Cannabis plantation raided

Officers of the Embilipitiya district police environment unit raid a half acre cannabis plantation on the banks of the Chandrikawewa at Kadurugasara, Embilipitiya on Wednesday and arrested one suspect after destroying the plants.

The suspect was due to be produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate yesterday. Embilipitiya police are investigating.
