Pending tsunami threats:

Rumour mongers to be dealt with severely

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said he has already given instructions to the Police to take legal action using Emergency Regulations against groups who spread false rumours on impending tsunami disasters, which cause disturbances to the public.

He requested intellectuals intending to make predictions about impending earthquakes and tsunamis to consult the Meteorological Department and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) before publicizing their views to avoid unnecessary fears among people.

He was addressing a press conference held at the Meteorological Department yesterday.

He said that he will consider revising the laws if the existing legal provisions are inadequate to take action in this regard.
