Answer to Trinco’s water woes
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa ceremonially inaugurated the rehabilitation and upgrading of Kantale water treatment plant and greater Trincomalee integrated water supply project yesterday. The new water supply scheme has been planned to solve the drinking water problem of the people of the Trincomalee District. Funds worth Rs 4,587 million will be provided for this project by the French and Sri Lankan governments. Around 330,000 people in Trincomalee District will benefit from this scheme. Ambassador for France in Sri Lanka and Maldives Christine Robichon, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Eastern Province Governor Mohan Wijewickrama, Tamil National Alliance leader R Sampanthan and Deputy Ministers K D S Gunawardena and Susantha Punchinilame also participated.

 


 

Dengue down in Kalutara

Thirty five dengue patients were treated at the Kalutara Nagoda Hospital in March while only 26 dengue patients were treated at the hospital in April.

The number of dengue patients has decreased, hospital sources said.


One killed in bus mishap

One person died at Sami Guliya on Tissa Kataragama main road yesterday evening when a private bus carrying pilgrims to Kataragama ran off the road and hit a lamp post and a tree, Tissamaharama police said. According to the police, the bus was carrying pilgrims from Kottawa.


Couple arrested for infant's death

A couple has been arrested by the Vavuniya Police on suspicion for the death of a new born infant. The infant died the next day after birth and the police have on suspicion arrested the couple and brought the corpse for a post mortem examination to Jaffna Teaching Hospital on April 19.

A woman of Nedumkulam is alleged to be the mother of the infant.


Fatal game

A youth had been dragged by the legs on the ground by his friends resulting in the fracture of his spinal cord.

T. Ganesha Mayooran (24) was admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital and died at the intensive care unit after two days on April 21.


Bus service to link North-South

To link the North and the South a new bus service from the Point Pedro to the Dondra Head will begin to operate soon. Under the leasing programme, the Point Pedro SLTB will purchase two buses which will operate simultaneously from the Point Pedro and the Dondra Head early in the morning and reach their destination in the evening.

This service has been started under Mahinda Chinthana. The bus that starts from Point Pedro will pass through Kodikamam, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Negombo, Galle and Matara. The route number of the bus is 87/32.


Man stabbed to death

In a family dispute at Akkarayankulam, Kilinochchi Ponnambalam Wijeratnam (42) of Mukkumban has been stabbed to death. He was stabbed when he intervened to ward off a knife attack on a woman by her eldest son.

The woman sustained injuries on her neck and is admitted to Akkrayan government hospital. The police are on the hunt to arrest the culprit.

 


 

Ex-cop remanded for cycle theft

An ex-Police constable arrested with a stolen bicycle valued at Rs 21,000 was remanded by Kalutara Magistrate Kaniska Wijeratne. The Police said the suspect had committed similar offences in the past in the Kalutara North Police area. The Police arrested the suspect following a tip-off on April 12.


Blue film sellers see red

Twenty suspects including 10 women were arrested with pornographic videos in their shops in Nugegoda on Tuesday.

The raid was conducted by a special police party on the instructions of SP Desabandu Tennakoon.


Memorial lecture

The Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Lecture organized by the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund will be delivered by Prof Sarath Wijesuriya at the SLFI Colombo on April 25 at 5.30 pm.


Meezan launched

The students Muslim Majlis of the Sri Lanka Law College will launch the 45th edition of Meezan at a ceremony at the main hall of the Sri Lanka Law College on April 25 at 2.45 pm. Attorney General Mohan Pieris PC will be the chief guest.


Charitha Atak at Bishop's College

Wilson Gunaratne's play Charitha Atak will be staged at the Bishop's College Auditorium, Colombo on May 15 at 3 and 7 pm. Proceeds are in aid of the welfare activities for elderly conducted by HelpAge Sri Lanka.

New Year celebrations

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year programme organized by the Moors Youth Club (affiliated to the Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs), Dehiwela for the second successive year will be held on April 24 from 8.30 am at Moor Road, Dehiwela. Independent Television Network Director Hashim Omar will be the chief guest. The award ceremony will be held at 5.30 pm. It will be held under the patronage of Club President Munasha Rauff.


Police New Year celebrations

The annual Police New Year celebrations will be held on April 24 at 9 am at the Bambalapitiya Police Grounds.

IGP Mahinda Balasuriya will be the chief guest. Senior and junior police personnel will participate.


Public lecture

An awareness public lecture titled Earthquakes and Tsunamis-A Sri Lankan view point organized by the Sri Lankan Association of Past Students of France (ASLAEF) will be held on April 28 at 5 pm at the auditorium of The Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA), 275/75, Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, off Baddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

This lecture will be delivered by Professor Kapila Dahanayake.
