Easter Messages

Christian teachings can help move towards lasting unity

President Rajapaksa

The festival of Easter celebrated on Sunday is of special significance to Christians as it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion and death at Calvary, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in a message to mark Easter.

Born among humans, Christ devoted his years of preaching to spread a message of understanding, tolerance and compassion that came from his core message of love to all beings. It was Christ's mission to save mankind from the burden of sin which he took upon himself, President Rajapaksa said.

The message added: "The Christian teaching of love and understanding can contribute much to strengthen the reconciliation now taking place in our country and help us move towards lasting unity.

Similarly, the teaching of Christ can also help in freeing people and nations from the many conflicts that threaten peace the world over. "I trust that every Christian in Sri Lanka whose belief in the divinity of Christ has been strengthened by his resurrection, will help spread his message of love and understanding throughout our land.

I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Easter".

Time to reflect on one's inner thoughts

Prime Minister
D M Jayaratne

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne said it is with profound reverence that he wishes all Christians in the world a Happy Easter.

Jesus Christ came to this world as the deliverer of a sinful world and laid down his life in fulfilling this task, the Prime Minister said in an Easter message.

The message adds: "The period of Lent which begins from Ash Wednesday culminating in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is therefore an ideal time to reflect on one's inner thoughts and experience spiritual uplift." "Today the faithful in the North too have received the full freedom to attend services and follow the passion of Christ."

The Prime Minister appeals to the faithful to offer prayers during the Easter service for the creation of a society of peace and amity under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who eliminated terrorism and united the Nation.
