Cop remanded for shooting

A police sergeant was arrested by the Katugastota Police Monday in connection with a shooting incident which occurred at a New Year Musical Show at Wathuwala, Katugastota Friday (April 15).

Ruwan Kumara Jayatunge of Nugawela was injured in the shooting and admitted to the Kandy General Hospital. The suspect was produced before the Kandy Magistrate and remanded till April 26.

Investigations revealed that the Police Sergeant had opened fire to quell a clash between two groups during the musical show. Police was forced to cancel several other New Year Musical events planned in the Katugastota area on account of this incident.

Investigations directed by ASP Mohottigedara are continuing under the supervision of senior DIG Gamini Navaratne.
