The National Housing Development Authority’s Welfare Society has organized an awards ceremony for their services rendered to the NHDA. Two Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships, Kirisame and Yuudachi with Commander seventh Escort Division Captain Hiroshi Ito on board, called at the Colombo Port yesterday on a two-day goodwill visit. The ships were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

 


Lorry skids killing cleaner

A drivers’ assistant had succumbed to his injuries after admission to the Mundalama Hospital when he and the driver of the vehicle were injured when their lorry met with an accident at Kiriyankalliya on the Chilaw-Puttalam Road on April 18.

The dead was identified as Abubakar Aziz (19) a resident of Horowpothana.

The lorry travelling from Colombo to Anuradhapura with a consignment of items, had skidded off the road and knocked against a Mara tree.

The Mundalama Traffic Police is conducting further investigations.


Road in disrepair

The stretch of road on the irrigation anicut at Pethara in Kitalagama in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Thihagoda, has been in a state of disrepair for a long time.


Extraordinary Good Friday service

An extraordinary Good Friday service will be held at St Luke's Church, Maradana Road (opposite Aquinas) Borella from 8 am to 11 am April 22.

The Preacher at this service, to which all are welcome, will be Dr Vijaya Corea who will focus his message on the Passion of Jesus Christ while speaking on the theme: "A fact of history with an impact on time and eternity, providing a life-changing experience for today."


Acting Defence Minister

Prime Minister DM Jayaratne has been appointed acting Defence Minister until President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Defence Minister returns from abroad, said a press release issued by the Prime Minister's office yesterday.


Bio-gas production unit

Mahaweli Systems Corr

A bio-gas production unit will be set up at the historic Mahiyanganaya temple area to recycle biodegradable refuse collected from the area daily.

The unit is proposed by the office of the director of planning at the Badulla District Secretariat with the co-ordination of the Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretariat.


Exhibition

Assistant High Commission of India in Kandy and India Council for Cultural Relations will hold an exhibition titled Puducherry Blue of 32 paintings of prominent artists from nine South Asian countries. The exhibition will be inaugurated at the E L Senanayake Children Library Auditorium on April 19 at 11 am and will continue till 5 pm every day till April 21.
