The Jaffna Technical College, which was managed by the Technical
Education Department has been upgraded as a Technological University by
the Vocational and Technical Training Institute.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa participated at the
inauguration ceremony. The Government of the Republic of Korea and the
Korean International Cooperation Academy (KOICA), granted technical and
financial assistance to the University, which has been upgraded into a
sophisticated technical university with the Korean technical knowhow.
A technological college from each province had been selected to be
upgraded as technological universities. With the initiation of the
National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) courses, the NVQ 5 and NVQ6
higher diploma courses were being conducted in these refurbished
universities.
There are around nine technological universities in the country.
While this will be the tenth college of its type, the other technical
colleges had already begun their academic activities. Accordingly,
Galle, Maradana, Kurunegala, Kandy, Aruppola, Anuradhapura and Badulla
Technical Colleges were the other places where technical colleges have
been established.
