Peradeniya Prof predicted Japanese quake

The earthquake which occurred in the North Eastern part of Japan on Thursday night was correctly predicted by Prof Athula Senaratne of the Peradeniya University Geology Department.

Dr. Senaratne made the prediction following a series of experiments carried out by a team of geologists led by him at the university. He predicted that an earthquake over five points on the Richter scale will occur in Japan between April 5 and 8. His prediction appeared in our sister paper Dinamina on April 4.


Deadly swing

A 12-year-old-boy in Passara died yesterday during an accident while participating in a Primary School New Year festival held at the Passara Pradeshiya Sabha Grounds, Passara OIC IP T M Ratnayake said yesterday.

The boy had been riding a swing tied to a goal post at the time of the incident. The goal post with the three swings tied to it had fallen onto the child’s head causing severe injuries. The child had died while being transported to the hospital. The victim, Kodituwakku Arachchilage Sasendra, was in Grade 7 at Passara National School.


Ratnapura gems in China

A new market for Ratnapura gems will be found in China with the opening of three new gem shops in Canton, Kumin and Gwanso by Chinese authorities soon, said Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Maheepala Herath.

This follows discussions he had with Chinese authorities during a recent tour of China, the Chief Minister said at a discussion held with officials of the Sabaragamuwa Chamber of Industries and Commerce recently.


Hatton fire caused by generator

The fire which gutted six shops in Main Street, Hatton on Tuesday was caused by a generator in the first floor of a bakery in the area, according to the findings of a team from the Government Analysts' Department led by Assistant Analyst Roshan Fernando which probed it.

The team in its report said a fire which ignited in the generator had spread to nearby shops causing the catastrophe.

A worker attached to the Bakery had refuelled the generator tank and kept the can with the balance fuel near the generator through negligence.

 

 


 

Workshop for Army personnel

Peradeniya University Agriculture researchers conducted a workshop on crop cultivation and animal husbandry for army personnel working in the Palaly Army Farm run by the Jaffna Security forces Headquarters recently.

The Palaly Army farm exceeds 85 acres, bears up-country and low-country vegetables. About 80 cattles and 40 goats are reared for milk and fertilizer. Approximately 150 soldiers work there.


Multi-service project for students

A students multi-service project organized by the Weliveriya Lions Club was held at the Ambaraluwa Maha Vidyalaya recently.

The program included providing them with Kola Kenda, worm medicine, toothpaste and tooth brushes. The Kola Kenda program has been held every Thursday each year on a proposal by Lions Club President Nimal Karunathillake.

A lecture on dental care and worm treatment was also conducted.

In addition, Lions Club began a herbal and fruit garden in the school compound.

Treasurer Nalini Kanchana Munasinghe and other Lion Members were also present.


Illegal miners held

Police took into custody two back-hoe loaders worth Rs 12 million, used in illegal sand mining in two lands in the Sooriyawewa area. The Walana Anti Vice Squad (AVS) carried the raid at Dedigamthota in Sooriyawewa on Wednesday.

Police also arrested the owners of the two lands and the drivers of the loaders.

Police sources said that the suspects were handed over to Sooriyawewa police and were to be produced in Court.


Fined

Owners of 15 illegal pharmacies in the Matale district were fined a total of Rs 200,000 after raids carried out by the district's Regional Health Office team led by Inspector S S Hapuarachchi.


Convocation ceremony today

The 19th convocation ceremony of the Supply and Materials Management Institute will be held under the patronage of Irrigation and Water Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva at Galle Face Hotel today.

Thirty six students who have successfully completed the three-year diploma in purchasing and material covering three modules will be awarded their diplomas at the occasion.


People's Bank New Year celebrations

The New Year festival of Kottawa People's Bank branch will be held on April 14 at 3 pm at the bank premises.

Ganu Denu will be held at 3 pm.

Western Zone II Assistant General Manager Sunil de Seram will be the chief guest.

The 18th annual convention of Jaffna Science Association was held at the Jaffna University Library auditorium. Prof. V. A. Sivanesan presided at the first day session.


Four held

The mastermind behind the Rs five million robbery on April 28 at Piliyandala and three other suspects were arrested by the Piliyandala police who seized three motor cycles and three three wheelers with Rs 1 million from their possession.

This followed the arrest and interrogation of an underworld gang leader named Baby on Wednesday.


Watery grave for soldier

A soldier drowned in the Kelani river at Ranwala while bathing last Monday during the day.

This was revealed at the inquest held on the death of K B Nuwan Thusitha Hemantha, 23, of Werahera by Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Kirindiwela, P W Amrasekara.

The deceased's brother K B Milan Hemantha, 26, and several others gave evidence. Malisha Weerasinghe, Wathupitiwala Hospital JMO held the autopsy.

A verdict of accidental death due to drowning was returned. Kirindiwela police led evidence.


Heavy fine for illicit liquor

Kandy Chief Magistrate N U B Kariliyedda imposed a Rs 50,000 fine on a person possessing 79 bottles of illicit liquor.

The fine was imposed on K G Heenbanda, 63, owner of the illicit Brewery at Waharangoda, Yatinuwara.


Man knocked down by train

A person died on the spot after being knocked down by the Colombo-Puttalam train near the Bangadeniya Railway Station Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as N A Darshana Udayakumara, 27, of Heenpennawa.

The body is lying at the Chilaw Hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy.

Chilaw Police are investigating.


No 234 bus service poor

Route No. 234 Delgoda-Colombo bus service through Kiribathgoda, Makola and Sapugaskanda operated by the Kadawata CTB Depot has deteriorated inconveniencing commuters, specially schoolchildren, teachers and government servants.


Elephants kill farmers

Two farmers in Batticaloa district were killed by wild elephants while they were working in their paddy fields on Thursday morning. The farmers were identified as Neina Mahammadu Mustapha Lebbe 66 and Mahammadu Ismail Ibrahim (40) of Valachchenai.


Alleged assault:

CM orders probe

The Provincial Education Ministry has launched a probe into the alleged assault on a student by a teacher attached to a school in the Nivithigala Education Division, reported in the Dinamina yesterday.

This is on the directions of Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Maheepala Herath. The Chief Minister has directed the Education Ministry to probe the alleged assault and submit a report to him.

The victim of the alleged assault is a 13-year-old student resident in Rajawatta, Rakwana.


Top Samurdhi banks

Five out of six Samurdhi Banks in Pannala DS division are placed among the best 40 Samurdhi Banks in the island, according to a grading done by the Samurdhi Development Authority.

Makandura Samurdhi Bank was placed 14th, Pannala SB placed 16th, Welpalla SB placed 19th.

A programme to provide education for Southern Province children of low income families not attending school will be established with World Bank funds.


Workshop on road safety for trishaw drivers

Nearly 100 Eheliyagoda trishaw drivers participated in a lecture-based workshop conducted by the Eheliyagoda police traffic branch to minimize road accidents and to supply safe transport to the public.

The workshop was held at Eheliyagoda Cooperative Conference Hall under Eheliyagoda OIC Pradeep Weerasekara's instructions.


Body wrapped in polythene

Workers digging a pit at the Kudamaduwella cemetery for a burial found an unidentified body wrapped in polythene buried there and informed Marawila Police on Thursday.

Police conducting investigations have arranged a Magisterial inquiry.


Suspects nabbed

The Greater Colombo Special Crime Operations Unit investigating a vehicle robbery at Padukka on March 10 arrested a suspect opposite the Watareka Railway Station with a micro pistol and four cartridges in his possession on Wednesday. Following interrogation of the suspect they arrested three more suspects resident in Homagama, Meegoda and Kiriwaththuduwa. They are being held under detention orders. Investigations are continuing.

A body of a day old infant was found in the Badulu Oya near station road bridge by Badulla Police on Thursday. The body is lying at the Badulla Hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy. Investigations are continuing.


Pakistan envoy visits Matale

Pakistan High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Seema Illahi Baloch visited Matale following an invitation of Transport Deputy Minister and MP for Matale Rohana Dissanayake.


Treasure hunters fined

Seven accused who pleaded guilty of excavating an archaeological site in search of treasure have been fined Rs 1.75 million.

Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Darshika Wimalasiri fined each suspect Rs 250,000 and imposed one year rigorous imprisonment in default when they were produced in Court on Wednesday.

The seven accused who are from Hurulunikawewa, Minuwangoda, Getalawa, Hibutana, Beruwala and Kiribathgoda areas were arrested by Galenbindunuwewa police on February 27 while hunting for treasure. IP Chanaka de Silva led the investigations.


Two nabbed with cannabis

Two suspects with over three kilograms of ganja in their possession were arrested in the Akurumulla village following a tip off.

The suspects, residents of Dompe, Pelahela, were produced before Gampaha Additional Magistrate Indika Attanayake and remanded.


Road concreted

The road from Kalugala to Gasnagaldeniya in the Nuwara Eliya district's Ambagamuwa DS division has been concreted by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat under the Gama Neguma program.

The Economic Development Ministry funded Rs 350,000 for this.
