New frontier for English Literature Teachers

The Language Studies Department of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), will extend its distance learning initiatives into a new frontier; e-learnin.

Using Mobitel's mLearning platform, lecturers will combine their experience and expertise to impart training online to teachers of English by conducting a 12 week online course, Practical Approaches to Teaching Literature. This learner centered course has been prepared to enhance the teaching skills of those interested in teaching English Literature for a local or an international syllabus.

The course which will be activity-based, will help teachers understand the characteristics of literature and introduce them to new approaches to teaching literature, based on contemporary theories. Participants will also engage critically with texts and investigate strategies that would help students understand the complexities of the various genres of literature. The modules used during the course will be used to present a practical framework on which classroom teaching could be modelled. Digital presentations, quizzes and discussions threads have been included to promote interaction among students and tutors. Two sessions of two hours duration held weekly will require participants to access the website for synchronous participation at given times. Between teaching sessions, students can participate in discussion threads and access recommended websites to enhance their knowledge and teaching skills.

A certificate will be issued to all those who had successfully completed the course. Anyone over the age of 18 who has an interest in teaching literature, is welcome to sign up.
