Train strike called off

A planned train strike by Sri Lanka Railways trade unions of Station Masters', Guards and the Control Room was called off yesterday evening with the intervention of Transport Minister Kumara Welgama.

Minster Welgama who met trade union leaders and members at the Transport Ministry promised to hold a disciplinary inquiry against those who violated the disciplinary code.

A Transport Ministry Spokesman said that trade unions launched the strike due to an irresponsible action of an engine driver who drove an empty power set without a guard from Colombo to Wadduwa last Sunday.

The railway guards trade union protested the action of the engine driver and launched the strike with the assistance of trade unions of station masters and the control room and several other railway trade unions.

Following Minister Welgama's assurance, station masters , guards and employees attached to the control room have reported back to work. IR
