Marians held to a draw

Kegalu Vidyalaya held St Mary’s College, Kegalle to a draw in their 33rd ‘Battle of the Golds’ played at the Public Ground, Kegalle yesterday.

On the first day 150 minutes of play was lost to rain and on the second day, bad light stopped play at 5.15 pm and after a couple of inspections umpire called off play at 6 pm.

Marians who were put into bat by their rivals were precariously placed at one stage with the scoreboard reading 119 for 9 before a last ditch stand of 39 between Chathuranga Ranaweera 40 (4 fours, 1 six) and Prince Jayakumar 5 not out helped them to total 158. Off spinner Udara Tillekasiri took 4 for 38.

Kegalu Vidyalaya in their turn at the wickets did not fare too well against the all spin attack of the Marians. Off spinner Malinda Gunaratne took 5 for 42 and leg spinner Prince Jayakumar had figures of 4 for 27.

St Mary’s College in their second essay declared at 116 for 6 with skipper Malinda Gunaratne stroking a brilliant 68 with 9 fours. Left arm spinner Samadhi Dissanayake captured 6 for 40 giving him a match-bag of 9 for 92.
