Pious, erudite and exemplary bhikkhu
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne, in a message of greetings to the Most
Ven Aggamaha Panditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Mahanayake Thera of the
Asgiriya Chapter, on the occasion of his 81st birthday, said the Most
Ven Mahanayake Thera was a pious, erudite and exemplary, Bhikkhu who had
earned honour from Buddhists here and abroad.
Born on March 17, 1930 at Udugama in the Kalugamuwa Colony in
Wariyapola, the Most Ven Mahanayake Thera was ordained in 1945. He was
appointed Anunayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter in 1998 and
subsequently, the Mahanayake thera in 1999.
The Government of Myanmar conferred the Aggamaha Panditha honorary
title on him in 2007, in recognition of his religious and social
service.
At a time when Buddhists the world over were observing the Buddhist
procedure and getting ready to celebrate the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva
Jayanthi, he would wish the Ven Mahanayake Thera good health and long
life to work for the perpetuation of Buddhism for many more years by
giving counsel by interpreting the dhamma and its meaning.
