GCE O-L results out:
Significant rise in pass rate

The Examinations Department issued GCE Ordinary Level Examination
2010 results yesterday afternoon. For the fist time in the country’s
examination history, the number passed in the core subjects have
significantly increased, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
Accordingly, 195,112 students have qualified to follow Advanced Level
streams. According to the Examination Department statistics 310,642
candidates sat the examination.
Of this amount 182,630 students have got through the examination
obtaining the ability to follow Advanced Levels. In addition, 12,482
students have also qualified to follow Advanced Level streams by School
Based Assessment. The passed percentage is 58.79 while it was 48.51 last
year, Examinations Commissioner Anura Edirisinghe said.
However 14,961 students have failed all subjects including in the
mother tongue. The failure rate is 4.82. Last year it was higher than
this year since 20,221 students had failed in all subjects. The failure
rate was 6.51, the Examinations Commissioner added.
For the first time in the examination history, pass percentage of
Mathematics, Science and English have increased to 61.61, 59.80 and
41.41, Minister Gunawardena said.
