St Bridget’s ‘B’ Division cager champions

St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo defeated Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda in the final 51points to 39 to emerge as the girl’s under-19 ‘B Division’ All Island Cager Champions at the St. Bridget’s courts on Monday.

Swairie Fernando of st. Bridget’s Convent who scored 34 points for winners in the final was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Her team mate Shenelle Perera who collected 15 points against Sokians was the Best Defensive Player. Rishana Madushi, the Sokian who broke the Bridgetens’ defence to grab 12 points with her lay-ups was picked as the Best Offensive Player of the Tournament.

Bridgetens maintained the lead from the beginning up to half time score reading at 23-16. Swairie scored seven baskets (14 points) and Krishani Kunchana (Dharmasoka) who made four baskets (8 points) were the leading scorers in the first half.Sokians posed a tough challeng by making two quick baskets in the beginning of the third quarter when Rishana put two successive lay-ups to bring the scores to 23-20, but failed to overcome Bridgeteens at any time.

Three of Sokians including Kunchana who made valuable contributions with 10 points was sent off for committing five fouls during the final quarter gave the opponents the chance to score on free throws. Sokians displayed a poor accuracy in shooting while Bridgeteens took the advantage of hight when collecting re-bounds and counter attacks.
