Prime Minister D M Jayaratne yesterday
commissioned rural electrification scheme at Uda Inguruwatte
in the Doluwa Divisional Secretariat Division. Over 150

Three wanted criminals held
Three suspects wanted in connection with a series of crimes were
arrested by Mawarala Police along with weapons following a random check
on a three wheeler around noon on Sunday.
Police also seized a locally made hand grenade, a 12-bore gun and a
galkatas from their possession. Following interrogation the suspects had
confessed for having carried out several robberies.
Wisdom University President due here
Wisdom University San Francisco President Dr Jim Garrison, will visit
Sri Lanka. He will deliver a lecture on Climate Change and Primordial
Mind at Yoga Mandhir, 3 Ridgeway Place, Colombo 4 on March 19 at 6 pm.
He will deliver the second lecture on Wisdom and Civilization at the
BMICH on March 21 at 5pm.
He will also lay the foundation to set up a Wisdom University in Sri
Lanka. The Wisdom University explores both ancient Wisdom traditions and
Wisdom cultures.
NATI conferred ISO certification
The Naval Artificer Training Institute (NATI) was conferred with ISO
9001:2008 Certification at a ceremony at the institute's auditorium in
Welisara on March 14.
The certificate was awarded by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution
(SLSI) for performance of the NATI in professional education. NATI
conducts three-year full time courses in English medium for five streams
of studies.
Literary Evening
A Literary Evening with Madeleine Wightman, writer, critic, editing
professional and regular writer to 'The Guardian' (UK) will take place
at the ICES Auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 on Friday, March
18, at 5.30 pm.
Birth anniversary
The Dawoodi Bohra community in Sri Lanka has organized a special
procession to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of their spiritual
leader Dr Syedna Mohammd Burhanuddin, on March 18.
Musical evening
The Brass Band of Holy Cross College, Gampaha, will present 'Crosster
Ritmiko', an evening filled with musical entertainment displaying vocal
and instrumental talents of students from various schools.
It will be held at the College grounds on March 20 at 4 pm.
Sarath Wimalasiri on Shraddhanjalee
The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation will present lyric composer, poet and a journalist W K
Sarath Wimalasiri through the Shraddhanjalee Program on March 19 from 12
noon to 12.45 pm. He makes an analytical presentation of songs composed
on themes that come in Buddhist Literature.
Public lecture
A public lecture on "The Uprisings in the Middle East - the Arab
Struggle for Democracy" organized by the ILA International Study Circle
will be held at the A A M Marleen Hall (Moors Islamic Cultural Hall)
Sheika Fatima Building No 7 Lily Avenue, Wellawatte on March 18 at 5 pm.
Commonwealth Games:
Minister off to bid host country status
Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and a team of
high ranking State officials left for Morocco yesterday morning to make
preliminary representation to bid for host country status to conduct the
next Commonwealth Games in Sri Lanka.
The tour’s aim is to present details regarding the claim to be the
host country by Sri Lanka at the preliminary discussions to be held in
Morocco with the participation of 19 countries.
The host country for the Commonwealth Games is elected by the vote of
71 countries.
Delft ruins preserved
A group of archaeologists who visited Delft recently have expressed
the opinion that the ruins found in Delft should be carefully preserved
without being allowed to erode. The Pony stable found in Delft west,
Sarapiddy is a unique preserve of ponies not found in any other place.
The Dutch Fort found in the locality where the government hospital is
situated is a place of historical importance The Peruku trees that serve
as a natural frontier on the Eastern side of Delft are natural gifts of
rare nature.
OBU family mass
The monthly family mass organized by the batch of ‘94 of St Joseph’s
College OBU will be held with the Way of the Cross on Sunday, March 20,
2011 commencing at 8am and will be followed by fellowship.
All Old Joes and their families are invited to participate in this
event.
Over 1,389 nabbed
The total number of persons nabbed for liquor offences in the Matara
police area last year was 1,389 whom the Court fined a total sum of Rs
4,067,280. There was 302 cases of having possession of cannabis and 144
cases of possessing heroin, 115 cases of selling arrack and there were
92 cases of selling kasippu. |
