More doctors for Medical Centre
Facilities at the Werahera Motor Traffic Department are to be
developed which would enable 10 doctors on call to check 500 applicants
daily to obtain their medical certificates required in order to apply
for driver's licences.
Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said that the medical centre
attached to the Motor Traffic Department in Werahera, would be equipped
with the latest technologies to facilitate the driving licence
applicants arriving from various parts of the country to obtain their
driving licences.
He said that nearly 1,000 applicants daily visit the Werahera Motor
Traffic Department to obtain their driving licences with the medical
certificates. As there is a shortage of doctors attached to the medical
centre in the Department, one doctor has to check over 100 applicants
per day and issue their medical certificates. More doctors are needed to
cater to the high demand created from applicants waiting in queue daily
to obtain their medical certificates.
There had been many instances where applicants have complained that
the service provided by the medical centre is insufficient.
The Minister said considering these shortcomings, the department had
decided to increase the numbers of doctors upto 10 at the medical centre
which would enable them to check more applicants and issue more medical
certificates a day. IR
