Beat that beat

Music and dance have always been a part of this world. Without music and dance this is a dead world. Throughout centuries music and dance branched out into many forms. On March 11 and 12 at the Bishop's college auditorium you will see and know how powerful dance can be. Because a concert like no other -Beat Dat Beat will take place.

At this concert four groups will take part. Four dance cultures will present themselves. It is destiny that these four groups came together. The four groups are Sway, Muddrika, Royal Warriors and Rivega Dance Studio. The organizers of this concert are Sway.

Sway Dancers

"There are eight members in Sway Dance Troupe. About 40 dancers are dancing for the concert with four dance styles: Latin American, hip hop, Jazz and Oriental." Said Sway co-founder Sadun Gomes.

The Beat Dat Beat concert is the brainchild of Sway and through sheer power of will they have made it happen.

"We are all friends with multi talents (four teams) so we wanted to be different with different kinds of dances styles, so Sway team decided to do an event like this and invited other teams to perform together." Explained Gomes.

The team describes this concert as 'a slick, modern- style show with high pitched choreography, multi-styled stage, customized costumes and smoky dancers whose steps range from Latin to hip hop and contemporary'.

Conceived, directed and choreographed by the dancers themselves, Beat Dat Beat reveals the diverse nature of universal dance moods and its influence on Sri Lankan dance culture.

All four teams have been built as strong performers. The hype is that this concert will be something extraordinary. Only the actual concert will determine the truth.

Sway is a rather young group formed in 2010. They are said to be very serious about what they do. Sway emerges as a strong Latin Ballroom dance team. They are professional to the last letter. Their performances are considered to be 'beautifully controlled and engrossingly effective with creative precision and exhilarating energy'.

Flamboyant ladies step up please! Muddrika, the all female troupe, is another relatively young outfit. They are led by Muddrika Swarnathilake who is their artistic director and manager adding interesting choreography. Their performances are broken into three sections; Jazz, Hip Hop and fusion.

From the teams taking part the Royal Warriors have secured the title 'Derana City of Dance 2009'. The team consists of 10 sinuous dancers who are said to be ready with some jaw dropping performances. The Rivega Dance Studio is headed by Rangika, an entrepreneur in Traditional fusion and folk dance styles. Rivega consists of 18 dancers both male and female.

It is solid and powerful in their performances you will witness a firm fullness of tone; a textured, rhythmic sharpness; an aesthetically formal grace and a glowing love of sheer performance. About 20 acts will be performed. Each team takes on five performances. The venue is Bishop's College Auditorium from March 11to 12 at 7 pm. As the main organizer of the event, Sway Dance Troupe gratefully acknowledges the invaluable support received from its choreographers, sponsors, supporters, members and friends.
