International Women’s Day today:

Women’s rights cannot be ignored

Prime Minister’s message:

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne, in a message to mark International Women’s Day which falls today, says that it is the duty of all to think about impediments, obstacles and harassments suffered by women who dedicate their entire life for the welfare of others.

The Prime Minister recalls that even the Vienna Declaration on Women has stated that women’s rights are the rights of the entire humanity. These rights of women cannot be ignored, divided or sacrificed by any means. He says that in this country where a period of three decades had elapsed ignoring the women’s rights because of the terrorist war. We must concentrate on the rights of women. If not for President Mahinda Rajapaksa the women in this country will certainly continue to suffer by various difficulties in the Sri Lankan society.

Prime Minister Jayaratne has further said that women account for a high percentage in the country’s literacy rate. Women have already proved that they can compete successfully with men as they have entered various professions and fields.
